Philanthropy is a hugely rewarding part of Sigma Kappa and Greek life in general. Giving back to the community is an important part of being a good citizen. Sigma Kappas find it much more rewarding to devote our time and energy to charitable causes instead of just monetary donations. Many of the events that bring Greeks together are centered around philanthropy and community service, including Greek Week and Safe Halloween. Community service is an area of Greek life that cultivates personal growth and a sense of social responsibility in members. Below you will see an overview of the causes Sigma Kappa supports.
Gerontology
In 1954, Sigma Kappa became the first sorority to recognize the need for continued comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of elderly populations. Sigma Kappas at MSU organize Senior Swirl, an event held yearly at a local nursing home. We decorate, bring snacks and entertainment, and do the seniors’ hair, makeup, and nails so that they can participate in a fun event and make connections with the young women of our chapter.

In 1984, Sigma Kappa responded to an increasingly critical problem facing older Americans by adding Alzheimer’s disease research and education to its philanthropic activities. Here at State we participate in Memory Walk, getting monetary pledges from family, friends, and community to sponsor our participation in the event, held by the Alzheimer’s Association. Since 1918 Sigma Kappa has paid homage to it’s Maine roots by supporting the Maine Sea Coast Mission, an organization that provides resources and services for the people in need on the islands off the coast of Maine. Each winter, the people on these islands are cut off from the mainland for several months. Alpha Tau chapter members work hard to make no-sew blankets to send to the Mission to ensure that our friends in Maine stay warm during the cold winters.
